This year Naughty Dog is re-teaming North and Baker in upcoming sequel Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, in which North will reprise his role as charming treasure hunter Nathan Drake and Baker will appear for the first time as Nate’s older brother, Sam. After a long separation, the two brothers team up as Nate embarks on another adventure – one that could be his last.
Game Informer got the two voice actors together on camera to discuss their roles in the game as well as their real life experiences of first encountering one another, and then eventually gaining fan followings that fantasize about a possible vicious rivalry between them (they actually seem to get on pretty well). Baker revealed that when a friend initially told him to play Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune he decided to play Assassin’s Creed instead (a game that also featured the voice of Nolan North). Getting into the meat of the game, North explained that Nate’s lack of blood relatives has been a strong motivator in his previous adventures.
The two actors (North especially) only manage to be serious about 20% of the time, which makes the interview a fun watch (head over to Game Informer to watch the whole thing). In between cracking jokes, however, Baker talked a little bit about how Sam views his little brother.
It will certainly be interesting to see an older Nathan Drake interacting with another piece of his past when Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is released, and it’s always handy to have another person with a gun when caught up in a firefight - even if that person is carrying a whole lot of emotional baggage.
“Sam has never really quite moved on but Nate has, and he’s found Elena, he’s found Sully, he’s found his calling, and I’ve never quite moved on from this. So in this way the younger has become the elder and the elder’s become the younger… Anything Sam can do, Nate can do better, but I don’t think Sam would ever acknowledge that.”
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End releases in 2015 exclusively for PS4.
